Kamilari
The village Kamilari, is located 2,5 km westwards from the
archaeological place of Faistos, and 2,5 km from the sea, where the
coastal resort of Kalamaki is situated. The name of the village is of
Byzantine origin, and it emanates from the word Kamilari, which means
the one who leads the camel. It is built on the top of three hills,
Eygora, Goylas and Aleyrwta, and has roughly 340 residents.

Most of the
houses are stone built and two-storey. Famous for its good climate,
Kamilari maintains sunlight 9 months a year. Kamilari is a quiet
traditional village, with panoramic view over the olive groves of the
plain of Messara from one side, and over the Libian Seas from the
other. It has been lived in since the Minoan period. One of the seven
wise men of antiquity, Epimneidhs, a big wise man and Seer, lived in
Metohi a small settlement of the community of Kamilari.

The old
village is built on the hill Eygora, in a position from where the
residents could check, the Turks that would probably come from the side
of the plain of Messara, as well as the pirates from the Libian Sea. In
the village a hotel, furnished apartments, rented rooms, taverns, and a
bar exist. The residents of the village are hospitable, with respect
to the tradition which is passed on from generation to generation.
The
village organizes events of cultural character, such as a local
Carnival, and the local feast of the 27th July in Kalamaki and the 6th
of August in Kamilari. It still revives old habits and traditions,
such as the burn of Iouda in Easter, etc.
